African leaders who died in office or who were elected to Presidential office, whose name or surname starts or ends with M:
In the past year, several African leaders died while in office. Most of them were not physically there of course, but usually died in a hospital on the European continent because they could afford to die there, while many of their people did not get some basic health care. Fortunately South Africans do not have to take their presidents or former presidents to other continents for good health care.
All the African leaders who died had a name or surname that that starts with the letter M. Those who passed away this year were presidents Malam Bacai Sanhá of Guinea_Bissau, who died in January, Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia, John Atta Mills of Ghana, Binga wu Mutharika of Malawi. These were the ones who apparently died of natural causes.
After the death of Meles Zenawi, the Ethiopians installed Haile Mariam Desalegn as the new prime minister in September. The new president of Guinea-Bissau is Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo. The Ghanaians also recently replaced John Dramani Mahama, Ghana (I kid you not!).
A former geologist Macky Sall was sworn in as Senegal’s new president on April 2
Joyce Banda’s name or surname does not start or end with M or MA but that is probably because she leads a country (Malawi) whose name starts with MA.
Mohamed Morsi (or Mursi) of Egypt was elected this year as well.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, a university lecturer, was elected president of Somalia on September 10
On December 4, Sierra Leone’s SLPP leader Julius Maada Bio conceded defeat to Ernest Bai Karoma
To crown this year, Ms Dlamini-Zuma was elected as President of the African Union and then of course that other African President, Barack Hussein ObaMA was re-elected in November….
Makes you think…doesn’t it?
Question for this coming week: Which M or Ma for President of South Africa will MAngaung deliver and will it be despite the spirit of MArikana hanging over it or because of it?
