Lizalis’idinga lakho is a beautiful hymn for sure. The English translation came out so like direct translation, e.g. happiness vs JOY. It’s missing the poetic tone thus loses meaning in English…

I am not sure about the truth in this song except that it is too colonial and has some elements of betrayal to the African nation. For instance when Tiyo says “Bona izwe lakowethu uxolele iizono zalo”. Who told him that Africa is full of sins that God needs to forgive? Again when he says “Thixo Nkosi yenyaniso”, this implies that there is a ‘false God; xa kukho owenyaniso. God is God. It is missionaries who said that Africans worship a false God because they never had a triune God.

Hi Sis Nokuzola, it is only when you understand the historical background of Tiyo that you can appreciate his insight. He is a man who had to leave his country at age 15 for Scotland etc.. all because of war that broke up (I can say because of colonialism). As a devoted Christian influenced by Pan Africanism, Socialism, and Social Justice, I fully agree with Tiyo that there is only one God and is that of Truth and Righteousness as oppose to a false one. It is also important to look at the entire poem to appreciate its international scope or intent. When reading this poem, prayer and song, I would rather recite, read, and sing it without imposing any ideas he did not propagate. (ubenemini emnandi Nzwakazi yomthonyama)

on Saturday morning as Mr Mandela left with the aeroplane at Waterkloof, I heard on tv a lady singing a song….without music while the plane got ready to lleave. IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL!!! Could you please tell me what it was?

I could not agree more with you Mr Ngcanga, with regards to the misleading interpretetion misconstrued by my esteemed Dr Mndende. Mr Soga never had any doubt in believing that there was only one God. He never said that Africa was a continent of sins in “his prayer, poem and song” (Thobile Ngcanga). It is mind boggling as to how people sententiously miss the beauty of this prayer. Read the whole prayer and derive your critic from a holistic perspective and do not subject yourself and our analyses on a one line, which Dr Mndende is also misintepreting.
Think deep how old this prayer is and look into the worls as to what is happening in our world as in now. Ask yourself if tat’uTiyo Soga wasn’t prophesying all what he wrote about and how profound it is.

I agree with you.its a prophetic song.as far I know when he was in sunday School Dr Tiyo wafikelwa ngumoya and its not specified what did the spirit say.after that the missionaries took him to scotland to study theology and on his way back from scotland to Africa ehleli eskepeni he wrote this song.from my own point of veiw I think he was born a prophet and the missionaries changed him like what they did to Ntsikana and Mantsupa.u can google these two u will see that they were African prophets n the missionaries converted them.

Make no mistake, I have read the whole song and for your own information we were forced to memorise it. I have not read one verse and have not analysed one verse. I have written three pages analysing the whole song in my book titled, “Flying with clipped wings: under the sword of poselytization in a secular state’. It the song not prophetic, it is proselytizing and undermining Africa. It says ‘Bona izwe lakowethu uxolele izono zalo’, utsho xa ebona umhlaba wakokwabo evela eSkotlani. Uthi ‘yala Nkosi singadeli imfundiso zezwi lakho’ esitsho exela iBhayibhile. Ngoku yayingekho le Bhayibhile ookhokho bethu babengadeleli babengaxhomekekanga kwiBhayibhile ukuba bafunde ukubumbana, imbeko yinto yethu leyo eAfrica. Was Soga a prophet na? hazi waprophetha ntoni? Was he a Dr, that’s news? I think its time we decolonize our minds so that Africa can be decolonized too. We say we are liberated but are still using tools that were brought by the colonizers like Bible, Brandy and Bullet. No matter things are worse now. kukho abantu abatyisa abanye ipetrol, grass, human hair, rats, snakes etc. Sakusa yiphi komkhulu? Siculiswa nooNkosi Sikelela iAfrica kaSontonga ewayelibhalela ichurch choir yakhe yaseWisile. Ithi imbali laqalwa ukucula ekuthanjisweni kukaMfundisi uMboweni wamaTsonga. Glory be to Jesus for raising this giant of faith. If only we could understand God’s plans for all men, black or white, then and only then we would understand the true meaning and devine purpose of this hymn to all people, black or white. I for one, love this hymn to the core because God’s Spirit revealed it’s true meaning.

Xa uvukwa ngumoya kwezi cawa zama missionaries, kuthiwa une demon, babe bengakwazi nokwazi uba uthini. Xa kusithiwa wayese sunday school uTiyo, wavukwa ngumoya, wathathwa wasiwa phesheya, akuthiwa wa profeta. Even if waye profetile, who would have documented that because our history has always been oral, and missionaries wouldnt write something truthfull to us as africans. Where are the prophecies of Prophetees Mantsopa? All that they write about is that she prophecised the battles and was exiled, converted to christianity. They wouldnt care about her prophecies because their mission was accomplished. She brought people to those Anglican Churches. This song was spiritual, and maybe it is the last time that Tiyo experience the spirit of God, as he was now systematic, no longer being lead by the spirit. He would have been a prophet like other African Prophets if he was not exiled to skotland.
