I was taught, as a young enthusiastic Christian, that “if I confessed with my lips that Jesus is Lord and believed in my heart that God raised him from the dead, I would be saved.” The words are from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans. (10:9) But even back then it sounded a little too easy. Could it really be true that all I had to do to escape hell and damnation was to say “Jesus is Lord”?
